E-cigarettes helped me kick a 21-year smoking habit and I’ve never looked back
I tried patches, pills… everything and just couldn’t quit - until I finally found the answer with electronic cigarettes
I’m Justin Smith, founder of Pure Vapor and Simply Vape. I’d like to share my personal journey of how e-cigarettes help me quit smoking after 21 years, to the point where I was hooked on 20 a day.
I was worried about the harm it was doing to my health, so I took up cycling. But things came to a head one day in 2012 when I got home from a 20km ride, had a shower and looked in the mirror at my exhausted face. I was shocked.
I thought to myself how counterproductive that I slog 20 km a day on the bike only to ruin all that by smoking 20 cigarettes a day.
I decided I was going to quit
I went to my GP and left with a prescription for nicotine patches and the will to succeed. But after two days without a cigarette and a stressful job, before I knew it there was a cigarette in my hand. Round one to smoking.
The next visit to my GP saw me leaving with a prescription for tablets that would take the cravings away and make smoking less satisfying. I read the list of side effects on the pill bottle, which scared me somewhat. But faced with worse if I carried on smoking I thought, let’s give it a go.
The first three days went OK but old habits die hard. I still wanted to put my hand to my mouth but this time my hand was armed with food instead of cigarettes. A little extra eating was nothing compared to one of the side effects of the pills - forgetfulness.
It came to a head on day five after driving through a set of traffic lights, when I suddenly asked myself, “was that light green or red?”
I knew there had to be a better way
Now realising if smoking didn’t kill me, the pills would, I searched for something else. That’s when I discovered a website selling electronic cigarettes.
I placed an order and waited for my e-cigarette to arrive. Unpacking it, I sceptically took my first puff and my mind raced - “It doesn't taste like my brand of cigarette but the sensation of smoking is definitely there.”
Inner turmoil followed for a week. I would be puffing on the electronic cigarette and after a while think, “I'm going outside for a real cigarette.” But once outside puffing on it I would think, “The electronic cigarette has 4000 less chemicals.”
I found the best way was to alternate between the two when I had the craving for a cigarette. Two packets of conventional cigarettes later and the e-cigarette had won. I was smoking fewer and fewer conventional cigarettes to the point where I no longer needed them.
Finally, set free
I gradually reduced the strength of the nicotine e-liquid and today I am using only nicotine free e-liquid. I still enjoy the sensation of smoking my electronic cigarette. It allows me to take a break for myself and use it as a reward.
I am now fitter and healthier than ever. I cycle 40 km a day - and I only look half as bad after it! Although I am not allowed by law to make any therapeutic claims regarding electronic cigarettes, you can draw your own conclusions after reading my personal story.
